How to Calculate Roof Square Footage

Calculating roof square footage is a two-step process. First, measure your home's footprint — length × width. Then multiply by a pitch multiplier to account for the slope. A flat roof has a multiplier of 1.0; a 4/12 pitch has a multiplier of about 1.054; a steep 12/12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.414.

The formula is: Roof Area = Length × Width × Pitch Multiplier

For example, a 40 × 30 ft home (1,200 sq ft footprint) with a 6/12 pitch: 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,342 sq ft of actual roof surface.

What is a Roofing Square?

A roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. All roofing materials — shingles, metal panels, underlayment, felt paper — are priced and sold in squares. One bundle of standard 3-tab shingles covers 33 sq ft, so you need 3 bundles per square.

Professional roofers always quote projects by the square, so knowing your square count is essential before getting estimates.

Roof Pitch and Its Effect on Area

The steeper your roof, the larger its actual surface area. Here's a quick reference:

2/121.014Low slope
4/121.054Standard
6/121.118Moderate
8/121.202Steep
12/121.414Very steep

Frequently Asked Questions

How many squares is a 2,000 sq ft roof?

A 2,000 sq ft footprint equals 20 roofing squares on a flat roof. With a 4/12 pitch the actual area is about 2,108 sq ft (21.1 squares), and with 10% waste you'd order 23–24 squares.

How do I calculate roof area from the ground?

Measure your home's length and width from the ground (or from your property survey). Multiply them together for the footprint, then multiply by the pitch multiplier for your roof slope. Add 10% for waste. Our calculator handles all of this automatically.

What is a roofing square?

A roofing square equals 100 sq ft of roof surface area. Contractors price all roofing materials by the square.

How much waste should I add?

Add 10% for simple gable roofs, 15% for moderate hip roofs, and up to 20% for complex roofs with dormers and multiple valleys.
